Week 22: Pomegranate

My friend recently had a dinner party and Andrew and I thought it would be fun to bring a new food that we could all try together. We found pomegranates, which neither of us had ever tried, and decided they would be perfect.

Dinner was an amazing squash risotto and Caesar salad and our friend Kayla supplied a bottle of white wine. Our pomegranates worked perfectly as part of the strawberries, raspberries and whipped cream Rebecca had planned for dessert.

A pomegranate is a fruit native to the Middle East, but is now grown in California and areas with similar climates. It’s about the size of an apple and the outside color is reddish. The seeds inside are what make the fruit so unique. Each of the dozens of seeds is surrounded by a juice-filled pocket. They can be pretty messy to cut and eat and the juice can stain, so be careful!

According to pomegranates.org, it is one of the most nutritious fruits you can eat:

High in vitamin C and potassium, a good source of fiber and low in calories. Pomegranate juice is high in three different types of polyphenols, a potent form of antioxidants. The three types – tannins, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid – are present in many fruits, but pomegranate juice contains particularly high amounts of all three. As antioxidants, they are credited with helping in the prevention of cancer and heart disease.

Rebecca added the pomegranates to the delicious strawberry/golden raspberry dessert and we were ready to get tasting.

It’s a good thing Rebecca knew the ins and outs of pomegranates because Andrew and I hadn’t actually realized that you’re only supposed to eat the seeds. The seeds are surrounded by a white membrane-y kind of thing. We started digging out the seeds with spoons but soon realized that was too complicated and picking up the pomegranate quarter and biting the seeds out was much easier. They tasted kind of sour and were really juicy – a really tasty treat.

The dinner party was so much fun – great food and fantastic friends and a new delicious food too.
